US -Mexico -Canada Trade Agreement

The United States(US), Canada And Mexico Have Arrived At A Revised Trade Agreement To Replace The Quarter -Century -Old North American Free Trade Agreement(NAFTA).

Key Highlights

The Most Prominent Changes Are The Tweaks To Production Quotas Applied To Canada’s Dairy Industry ,Which Were Intended To Help Protect It By Restricting Supply.

Under The New Deal, Canada Will Have To Allow American Dairy Producers To Compete Against Locals,A Move That Favour Canadian Consumers.

The US Agreed To Retain Certain Chapters Of The Dispute-Settlement Mechanism As A Compromise.

This Will Help Canada And Mexico Deal With Protectionist Duties Imposed By The US Against Their Exports.

Analysis

Even Though The Deal Does Not Do Anything New To Promote The Cause Of Free Trade Among The North American Nations, It Achieves The Objectives Of Averting Any Significant Damage To The International Trade System.

However, The New Deal Attempts To Micromanage Trade In A Way That Benefits Aspecific Interest Groups At The Cost Of The Overall Economy. The New Labour Regulations And Rules Of Origin. Will Add To The Cost Of Production Of Goods Such As Cars, Thus Making Them Uncompetitive In The Global Market.

What Is NAFTA?

North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) Came Into Effect On January 1,19994 To Lift Tariffs (Taxes On Imports And Exports) On Virtually All Goods Traded Among The US, Canada ,And Mexico.

The Aim Of NAFTA  Was To Make It Easier For Companies In The Three Countries To Do Business Across Borders.

The Argument For NAFTA Was That- By Boosting Economic Integration-There Would Be Increased Economic Prosperity In All The Three Countries.

However, The Current US Administration Blames NAFTA For Wiping Out US Manufacturing Jobs Because It Allowed Companies To Move Factories To Mexico Where Labour Is Cheaper.

US To Pull Out Of Russia Missile Pact

The US Decided To Pull Out Of The Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty With Russia.

Key Points

At Issue Is Russia ‘S Alleged Development And Deployment Of The Novator 9m729 Missile ,Also Known As The SSC-8,That Could Strike Europe At Short Notice.

In 2014, The US Administration Raised The Issue Of Russia Testing A Ground -Launched Cruise Missile.

However, Russia Has Denied The Allegations And Raised Counter -Allegations Of The US Installing Missile Defence Systems In Europe.

Russian Government Has Warned The US Against Such A Withdrawal .It Has Threatened Action In Response, Including Of A Military Nature.

What Is The International-Nuclear Forces Treaty?

The Treaty, Signed In 1987,Is A Crucial War Era Treaty Banning The Development ,Testing And Possession Of Short And Medium Range Ground Launched Nuclear Missiles With A Range Of 500 – 5000 Km.

It Was Central To Ending The Arms Race Between The Two Superpowers, And Protected America’s NATO Allies In Europe From Soviet Missile Attacks.

A Withdrawal Will Allow The U.S New Weapon Options In The Pacific In Its Efforts To Counter China’s Growing Influence. There Are Also Concerns That The Treaty’s End Could Mark The Beginning Of A New Race Between The U.S. And Russia.
